Awkward Moments in Kazakhstan

October 1, 2008 at 1:51 am 3 comments

We’ve started a little list of awkward things that have occurred while we are here in Kazakhstan. We’re certain that it will grow the longer we stay, but here is what we have for now:

Everyday Life

  • Not being able to be able to figure out how to open the heavy steel door in your apartment in time to prevent the person behind from crashing into you.
  • Falling prey to the Kazakh foot trap: the randomly placed doorsill that is four inches high for no particular reason.
  • Our favorite: Asking, in perfect Russian, how much something costs and then realizing you donโ€™t have a prayer for understanding the response.
  • Being the only one of the three people behind the counter and the five people waiting in line, not to realize the clerk is trying to explain the proper procedure for bribing him to check in your overweight baggage.
  • Going out shopping for shoes while your husband stays behind and realizing you have no way of getting back into the apartment and no way of letting him know you need to get in.

Baby House

  • Allowing your kid to kick over his bowl of food while you are feeding him and, no, he doesnโ€™t get another one.
  • Letting your seven month old child drink from shot glass number seven instead of shot glass number six.

I’m sure there will be many more to come!

    heee heeee…you are funny.

You FORGOT to say, locking your FRIEND’S apt door from the inside by some alternative method and worrying we’d all be STUCK inside my apt for the rest of our stay in kaz. ๐Ÿ™‚

And, guess what…I LOST one of my purchases from the market yesterday. The small bag with 2 pairs of tights for Leeza and a pair of socks for me never made it home. I must have dropped it somewhere…so mad!!! ugh!!!!!

ya’ll are the best shopping/walking around buddies EVER! I look forward to doing that again. Now I have to go back to find those tights and socks…I’m sure someone has them for me and is keeping them safe and sound (yeah right!!!)

Ya’ll are great folks and your boy is going to have such fun being your kiddo. ๐Ÿ™‚

Isn’t it so much fun being in a country like Kazakhstan? ๐Ÿ˜€

My favorite is the bribing part!… Watch and learn! You might need it again in the future… ๐Ÿ˜€

Glad everything is going well! Love the pictures! You’re little guy is soooo cute!!!

Interesting that you had to bribe for the overweight luggage, too. It caught us off guard. I guess that is the way it goes over there.
