Paying Rent

Tuesday, October 7, 2008: Day 34 in Kostanai

Our coordinator stopped by this evening with our landlord so that we could pay our rent. Before giving him our cash, however, he insisted that we put the money on the floor. It seems that Kazakh tradition states money exchanged in the evening shouldn’t be taken from the hand but from the floor. This will assure that both parties will receive more money in the future.

Don’t ask me to even try to explain that one.

that is really interesting! we just to go our landlords office to pay the rent………and just hand it over… floor necessary.
Maybe THAT is why I’m running out of money……..that makes total sense.
it has NOTHING TO do with the fact that Leeza has a whole new wardrobe and every souvenir in Kostanai…….LOL

It’s not just Kazakh tradition… Russian and Belorussian people also believe that you cannot exchange money in the evening… it’s like bad luck or something… But it’s the first time i hear about putting money on the floor! We usually wait ’till the morning 😀
